"The Coop" began his movie career in 1925 as a cowboy extra in Hollywood westerns.

A year later Gary Cooper got his big break at the Goldwyn Studio in The Winning of Barbara Worth, and was on his way to becoming a legend in the American motion picture industry.

During the 1920s and 30s, Cooper appeared in one film after another, filming as many as eight features in a single year. By the mid-30s his skills as an actor led him to some of the best roles of his career.

He won the Academy Award for the best actor of 1942 for Sargeant York, and again ten years later for the unforgettable High Noon.

At the end of his career Cooper was presented with a Special Oscar for his many memorable screen appearances.

Marion Davies and Gary Cooper became life-long friends after appearing together in the Civil War drama, Operator 13 (1934).

He and his wife, Rocky, became Hearst favorites and were regular guests at the San Simeon weekends and the big Ocean House parties.

Gary Cooper died of cancer in 1961 .

Though Gary Cooper had many successful ventures in comedy, he would always be identified with the strong, silent man of the West.

He was ideally suited for the role of a cavalry officer in Operator 13, the Civil War drama that was one of producer William Randolph Hearst's favorite movies.
