Marion's Homes: Ocean House, Santa Monica

William Randolph Hearst wanted Marion Davies to have the largest, most opulent beach house along the West Coast, and architect William Flannery translated that dream into a Georgian-style reality. Ocean House dwarfed the other beach palaces along the Pacific Coast Highway, both in size and grandeur.

Hearst and Davies entertained on a large scale at Ocean House, becoming known for their generous hospitality, great parties and famous costume balls.

They quickly became the leading host and hostess of the movie colony at Santa Monica. Their original entertainments were fun, with great attention paid to creating an atmosphere of open hospitality for the enjoyment of each guest. The best food and drink, expert service, acres of fresh flowers and big name orchestras were provided for large parties, especially for VIP's like Charles Lindberg.

Ocean House could accommodate up to 2,000 guests, but the fanciest of parties usually had only about 300 of the rich and famous. After a day at the studio cast members, friends and neighbors would gather for drinks by the pool, tennis matches on the two private courts, dancing to the hit tunes of a big name band in the ballroom, a gourmet feast in the elegant dining room or watch the latest first-run films in the screening room.

The guest lists read like a Who's Who of the Hollywood greats and celebrities, national heroes, leaders of industry and European aristocracy. All were invited because they were likeable and fun, not only for their prestige, power and wealth. Out of work actors and others with career troubles could socialize with the studio bigwigs, meet the right people and be seen in the right place. And, have endless fun.
